Maintenance is not regulated by any formula. This means that the amount and duration of spousal support is almost entirely left up to the judge's discretion, depending on several factors including:

• The age of each spouse
• The health of each spouse
• The length of the marriage
• The ability of each spouse to be self-supporting
• The standard of living the parties enjoyed during the marriage
• The income of the primary breadwinner

As a rule, the obligation of spouses to support each other does not necessarily end when a divorce is final. In the instance the divorce leaves one spouse with very little income and the other with enough to contribute to the low-income spouse's support, courts will usually award maintenance.
